The couple was born in St. Louis, she made the move to New York City at the age of only a few days. In 1991, she earned a bachelor's in art in art from Barnard College. She was a waitress at An American Place in New York City throughout the year. Guarnaschelli began her culinary career by watching as she watched the mother of her child, who was editing books during the time, attempt to test various recipes at home. She began her career under Larry Forgione before working in numerous restaurants which included Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. Then she was the executive cook at Butter. Guarnaschelli took part in 2007's Farmers Market Battle, a segment of Food Network's Iron Chef America, where she took on Cat Cora. The following year, she took part as the season's third runner to the winner of The Next Iron Chef, as well as a judge for the show from the beginning. The contest ended in defeat on the episode Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. She was appointed sous-chef for Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian following the fourth season of The Next Iron Chef. In 2008, she became the host of The Food Network's The Cooking Loft with Alex Guarnaschelli who teaches an intimate group of students instructing them on how to reinvent classic dishes.
